NEI GIARDINI NON DORME L’ERBA: BOOK LAUNCH AND EXHIBITION BY VALERIA CARRIERI

Wednesday, 20 March 2024

Nei giardini non dorme l’erba, is a publication by Valeria Carrieri published by DITO Publishing (Rome) and dedicated to the domestic nymphs living inside the artist's notebooks as personifications of plants and flowers collected during her walks. The anthropomorphic figures, which belong to common plant species, do not correspond to illustrations of legendary metamorphoses, rather they constitute a population of small silent divinities, difficult to say whether happy or miserable. They are inhabitants of a garden taken as a metaphor for the artist's intimate and secret creative dimension. On this occasion, some of the drawings included in the publication and several papier-mâché sculptures by the artist will be presented at IUNO, including Brocca e volto / Autoritratto Notturno, selected as part of the IUNO Commission programme for the winter solstice.

Valeria Carrieri is an artist and researcher with a multidisciplinary background. She graduated in Painting from the Hear in Strasbourg and later obtained a PhD in Philology and Criticism. Her research mainly feeds on painting but also looks at so-called brut and folk art, poetry and theatre, questioning the silent space between art and everyday life, the indefinable limit between anthropomorphism and objectivity. She has taken part in exhibitions and residencies in Italy and France, including the Simposio di Pittura curated by Luigi Presicce at the Lac O Le Mon Foundation and now in the program VIR-Viafarini-in-residence in Milan. She lives in Rome, her hometown.
DITO Publishing  is a Roman independent publishing house dedicated to contemporary photography and visual arts founded in 2020 by Martha Micali and Klim Kutsevskyy.
It develops books and editorial projects, including limited and special editions, with particular interest on materials and book design.
