MATILDE CERRUTI QUARA
From September 25 to December 8, 2023, IUNO opens its doors in via Ennio Quirino Visconti for the residency of Matilde Cerruti Quara: an Italian and British multimedia artist, poet, performance-maker, and writer of Slavic descent, whose practice expands across experimental theatre, text-based artworks and immersive installations, etchings, embroideries and prints on aluminum and mirror. Rooted in the exploration of language and narrative, Matilde Cerruti Quara’s work investigates identity, archetypes, systems of belief, natural forces, spirituality and rituals, sexuality and power dynamics. In her live works, she often involves choreographers, music composers and other performers resulting in creative collaborations where a sense of community prevails. She holds a Diploma in Acting from the Royal Central School of Speech & Drama and an MLitt in Modern Art Theory from the University of Glasgow. Matilde Cerruti Quara lives and works in London, and more recently established a second base in Trieste. During her residency at IUNO, the artist will concentrate on the writing and staging of her first performance piece in Italian, starting the figure of Circe, considered as a canovaccio, which will be presented on December 6, 2023 at IUNO. In parallel, in addition to pursuing research in Rome, and its surroundings, as regularly consulting Archivia, at the Casa Internazionale delle Donne, and engaging with the artistic realities active in the city, Matilde will also use her available time to experiment with new possibilities for her practice, taking improvisation lessons with electric guitar at the Centro Studi Musicali Roma through which the artist hopes to find new spatial sonorities for her works. Alongside all this, and the final work, there will be a live programming taking place at IUNO, consisting of two poetry nights, which will be held on October 26 and November 16, 2023, which aim to create a bridge between the London scene, familiar to the artist, and the local scene. For each occasion, a guest artist from the UK will read, joined by two, ore more, Italian ones. More information will follow. Matilde Cerruti Quara's residency and research, as well as the three scheduled events, are made possible through Arts Council England-DYCP Grant (Round 15), of which Cerruti is a recipient.
